Chapter Thirteen

The next morning, I awoke with a pounding headache. I wasn’t sure if it was my headache or Rosemary’s. Yes, the lady who had been appearing in my dreams told me that her name was Rosemary. And she implored me to help her. She said I was the only one who could. I heard a familiar screech outside my door. Yes, pun intended. I knew instantly that it was Sage. I stood up gently from the bed, the headache intense, and opened the door to the balcony and a gentle spring rainfall.

Sage was perched on the balcony rail again, and I was surprised to see no rain falling on the terrace outside my room. I glanced up and noticed that there was also a balcony on the third floor that created a protective overhang, and I thought how lovely it would be to sit out and enjoy a coffee in the rain. It also reminded me that we hadn’t been back to the attic since finding Gordy’s body, bless his heart, may he rest in peace. And that further reminded me that we never got around to Samantha’s dreams the day before about what happened before we arrived on this island.

“It’s a lot,” Sage said. She was speaking aloud, and I much preferred it.

“I’m sorry. What is?” I asked.

“Everything that’s happened since you arrived,” Sage answered. “Are you journaling it all?”

“No. Maybe that’s contributing to the out-of-sorts feeling I have. I usually journal every morning. But I didn’t bring my journal.”

“Not a problem!” Sage said. “In the bedroom, go to the small chest next to the bathroom. Open the bottom drawer.”

“Okay, why?”

“Go ahead, now,” said the owl.

“Bossy much?” I asked.

“Testing your hearing ...” it snarked back. I left the door open while I went inside to open the drawer. It made me feel uneasy to think about opening Nellie’s chest. It felt like an invasion of privacy.

“Nellie’s gone. Nothing here belongs to her anymore,” Sage said. “And if she were here, she would offer that drawer to you with pleasure.”

I pulled the drawer handles. It was heavy and a bit stubborn. Inside I found that it was full of unused red leather journals plus 3 boxes of writing pens.

“Go ahead. Take one,” Sage said. “Before you go downstairs this morning, write down everything you can remember from your dreams. It will be important to remember all that you can.”

“Why? What can you see, Sage? Apparently, you saw me coming here, and now it sounds like you can see the future too.”

“I can see much on both sides of the veil,” the owl said.

“By the veil, you mean those alive and those who aren’t, right?”

“Yes, that is correct. I cannot see far future, but I can see near future as it pertains to my charge. If there’s any confusion, that means you.”

“What exactly is near future? Hours, days, years?”

“Sometimes I can’t see the amount of time, but not years. Listen to me, danger is coming. You must solve Rosemary’s death to protect not only yourself, but Georgia and Samantha too.
